Okay, mama, let's talk about one of the most exciting parts of pregnancy prep:

packing your hospital bag! It's like preparing for a mini vacation, except the destination is parenthood and the souvenir is a tiny human. (No pressure, right?! 😉)

But seriously, having your bag packed and ready to go can give you peace of mind as you approach your due date. So, grab your favorite comfy bag, and let's dive into the essentials you'll need for a smooth and comfortable hospital stay.

  • For Mama:

  • Comfortable Clothes: Think loose-fitting pajamas, a cozy robe, and non-skid socks. You'll want clothes that are easy to move around in and comfortable for breastfeeding.

  • Nursing Top: For comfort of breastfeeding moms.

  • Nursing Bra & Breast Pads: If you plan to breastfeed, pack a comfortable nursing bra and some breast pads to absorb any leaks.

  • Postpartum underwear: Postpartum pads, underwear and overnight pads.

  • Cooling Liners: Some hospital provides them, but I'd recommend taking your own to be sure you have them when needed.

  • Toiletries: Don't forget your toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, and any other essentials you use daily.

  • Going-Home Outfit:  Pack a comfy outfit to wear home from the hospital. Remember, you'll likely still look pregnant, so choose something loose-fitting and comfortable.

  • Slippers & Flip-Flops:  Slippers for walking around the hospital room and flip-flops for the shower.

  • Phone Charger:  Essential for capturing those first precious moments with your little one and staying connected with loved ones.

  • Snacks:  Hospital food can be... interesting. Pack some of your favorite snacks to keep your energy up between meals.

  • Entertainment:  A book, magazine, or tablet can help pass the time during labor or those quiet moments after delivery.

  • Insurance Card & ID

  • Birth Plan (if you have one)

For Baby

  • Going-Home Outfit: A cute and comfy outfit to bring your little one home in.

  • Onesies (3 total): Pack three separate onesies —two newborn size and one premature size (just in case!) for comfort and fit.

  • Singlets (3 total): Three little undershirts to help keep their core temperature regulated.

  • Swaddle (2 total): Pack two swaddle —these are essential for keeping your baby warm and snug, and having a spare is wise in case one gets dirty!

  • Blankets: newborns need help staying warm because their body systems for thermoregulation are immature.

  • Hats & Socks: Tiny hats and socks to keep those little extremities warm.

  • Nappies/Diapers (x 4): The hospital provides the majority you'll need, but pack four of your own nappies/diapers just in case you need them right before discharge or on the journey home.

  • Wipes: For those inevitable diaper changes.

  • Burp cloths: These are your first line of defense against the messiest part of newborn care right from the first few feedings.

  • Dummies (Pacifiers) (Sterilized): Pack a couple of sterilized dummies in case your little one needs extra soothing.

  • Birth Announcement Cards: Have a few of these ready to go if you plan on sharing the news or a photo right after the birth!

  • Car Seat: You won't be able to leave the hospital without it! Make sure it's properly installed in your car beforehand.

  • For Your Partner:

  • Snacks & Drinks:  Labor can be long, and your partner will need to stay fueled up too.

  • Change of Clothes:  An extra pair of comfortable clothes or pajamas, just in case they need to stay overnight.

  • Going home outfit: Packing nice and fresh clothes is a great idea if they want to be in the photos, too.

  • Toiletries:  The basics like a toothbrush, toothpaste, and deodorant.

  • Flip flops: For comfort.

  • Phone Charger:  Essential for capturing those first precious moments and staying connected.

  • Entertainment:  A book, magazine, or tablet can help pass the time during labor.

  • Toiletries:

  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, floss, soap, facewash, deodorant, makeup, lip balm, brush, makeup, hair ties, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, dry shampoo, hairdryer, straightener.

  • When to Pack:

It's a good idea to have your hospital bag packed and ready to go by 36 weeks. You never know when baby might decide to make an early appearance!

Pro Tip:  Keep your bag somewhere easily accessible, like by the door or in your car. That way, you're ready to grab it and go when the time comes.

Bonus Tip:  Consider packing a smaller "labor bag" with essentials you'll want during labor, like lip balm, a hair tie, and a water bottle.

Packing your hospital bag is an exciting milestone in your pregnancy journey! By being prepared, you can focus on what truly matters: welcoming your little one into the world. ❤️
